The San Francisco 49ers remain publicly committed to Jimmy Garoppolo at their starting quarterback in 2021 despite only having one healthy season over the past three.
“I do believe Jimmy’s going to be our quarterback next year,” Kyle Shanahan said this week.
The 49ers are 22-8 when Garoppolo plays and 7-26 with all other quarterbacks under Shanahan.
“Look at Jimmy’s record when he’s been here. Jimmy, you can win with. He’s proven that,” Shanahan said. “He’s proven he’s a starting quarterback in this league. We had a couple of other guys who got opportunities this year who played like they have a chance at times to be starting quarterbacks, but they did play like backups overall.”
Garoppolo signed a five-year, $137.5 million contract after the 2017 offseason.
“I think he would have taken steps forward and it would’ve been great for him to play this year,” Shanahan said. “After what he got playing the year before, being able to go through his first full season, I think regardless of how it started out, it would have been a good experience for him to only get better. The injuries he had kind of took the year from him. ... It was unfortunate for Jimmy and for our team. I know it’s frustrating for him, but that’s why he’s got to go into this offseason and do everything he can in this offseason to get ready for Week 1 next year.”
The Washington Football Team has released Dwayne Haskins.
"This afternoon I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him. I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward," Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.
Haskins was the 15th overall pick in 2019 and was benched in the fourth quarter after two interceptions and a lost fumble.
Haskins started for two straight weeks despite being fined and losing his captain role for violating COVID-19 protocols.
The Kansas City Chiefs edged the Atlanta Falcons 17-14 on Sunday to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.
The 14-1 Chiefs, who have won 10 straight games, will receive the AFC's only first-round playoff bye and will play their divisional-round game at Arrowhead.
In the victory, Travis Kelce became the first tight end to have two 100-catch seasons. Kelce caught seven passes, giving him 105.
Kelce also set the single-season yardage record for a tight end. He had 98 yards, giving him 1,467. The San Francisco 49ers' George Kittle held the previous record with 1,377 yards, set in 2018.
"To get a week of preparation, a week of really locking in and getting the body right that late in the season is so key, and it's much needed if you want to make that playoff push,'' Kelce said. "That's what you work your tail off for all season. I'm just proud to be a part of this team and be able to do it again this year.''
Drew Lock targeted Jerry Jeudy 15 times on Sunday, but the rookie wide receiver had just six catches for 61 yards.
Jeudy had 5 drops, including two very costly ones.
He has been targeted 91 times this season and caught just 41 passes.
"Sometimes, drops happen," Jeudy said. "I'm watching the ball come in. I just dropped it. And I've just got to focus on the next play. It just happened too many times. That's unacceptable."
At least two NFL teams have reached out with interest in Urban Meyer.
Meyer did not dismiss the overtures and is considering whether to make the jump to the NFL and intends to make a decision in the next week.
Meyer last coached at Ohio State in 2018 but has never coached at the NFL level.
Meyer coached Florida from 2005 to 2010, making him a logical fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Denver Broncos will retain Vic Fangio as head coach in 2021.
The Broncos will have their fourth straight losing season.
The Broncos know how Fangio operates, respect his approach and believe he was dealt a difficult hand this season between the Broncos' early-season injuries.
Fangio signed a four-year contract with a fifth-year option when he was hired by the Broncos in January 2019.
Logan Ryan has agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the New York Giants.
Ryan, 29, earned the extension with his strong play this season. He signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Giants back in late August that included another $1.5 million in incentives, and admitted that his familiarity with new coach Joe Judge played a major factor.
Travis Kelce is on the verge of breaking the single-season receiving yards record for tight ends.
Kelce has 1,318 yards entering the Kansas City Chiefs' game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
He needs 60 yards to break the record set by George Kittle in 2018 (1,377).
The Detroit Lions could be without a huge part of their coaching staff against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.
According to a report, COVID-19 positives from Tuesday left the coaching staff in a difficult situation with almost all of their defensive staff members considered close contacts.
Interim coach Darrell Bevell is also considered a close contact.
